Mallorca Road Trip: Along the North of the Island

A Mallorca road trip along the north of the island takes you to beautiful beaches, towns, and the iconic Formentor Cape. There is a lot to explore on this side of Mallorca. Join me in exploring the best locations on this route.

Formentor

I am beginning the list of attractions in northern Mallorca with the Formentor Cape, situated northeast of Mallorca. From here, on a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of the neighboring island of Menorca.

For travelers following a Mallorca itinerary through the Tramuntana mountains, the Formentor Cape marks the culmination of their journey.

Formentor is located 10 km away from the nearby town of Pollensa. To reach it, you need to follow the MA2210 road, which passes through the port. However, please note that this route is closed during the summer season, specifically between June 15 and September 15, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The Formentor Beach in Mallorca is a striking gem, boasting a long strip of sand embraced by a pine forest. Despite occasional crowds, it manages to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.

Cala Figuera

This is a virgin cove of impressive beauty. Once you arrive at Cala Figuera, you will feel completely disconnected from the outside world. The turquoise color of the water, surrounded by the green pine tree forest, creates a magnificent landscape.

This cove consists of sand, pebbles, and rocks, and it is only 45 meters long and 40 meters wide.

Pollensa

I adore the medieval streets of this charming town, adorned with grand 17th and 18th-century homes that were once owned by noble families. It’s fascinating to note that in ancient times, this land belonged to the Knights Templar.

While strolling around Pollensa in this Mallorca road trip, I stumbled upon an ancient bridge known as the Roman Bridge. For centuries, it has been widely believed to have been constructed by the Romans, though the earliest documented references to it only date back to the 15th century. Therefore, it is highly likely that its origins can be traced back to the medieval period.

From the top of the historic church El Calvario, you can obtain breathtaking views of this captivating area on your Mallorca itinerary. You will have to climb 365 stone steps; however, once you arrive, you will feel that it was worth the effort.

Pollensa offers more than just its beautiful church and rich history. The town is also home to charming restaurants and well-preserved, old-fashioned hotels like the Hotel Illa D’Or, where Agatha Christie found inspiration to write her novel “Problems at Pollensa Bay”.

From Pollensa you can also engage in a hiking private tour with a lot of options to choose from. Book here your Hiking Private Tour in Pollensa.

Pollensa Beach and Port

The Port of Pollensa, known for its British community, offers excellent infrastructure, beautiful beaches, and abundant opportunities for water sports such as paddle surfing and kitesurfing. It has also become a popular destination for cycling enthusiasts.

The calm waters of Pollensa beach and its promenade attract families with children.

Cala San Vicenc

This beautiful beach comprises four coves. It is not advisable to visit on extremely windy days due to its exposed coves. You can reach San Vicenc by taking the MA-2000 road that passes through Pollensa. There is also public transportation available.

Alcudia

This Mallorca road trip brought me from the port of Pollensa to Alcudia. Between the two, there is a distance of almost 11 km, and it takes around 20 minutes by car to arrive via the MA-2220 road.

Alcudia was founded by the Romans and is considered the first capital of the island of Mallorca. In 2020, it was officially declared one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.

Alcudia is the only Spanish town that still maintains its complete medieval wall. It is 6 meters high and 2 km in circumference, allowing visitors to take a leisurely stroll along it. Some of the most popular spots for tourists to take photos are the access gates to the walled city that have been preserved since medieval times, namely Porta des Moll and Porta de Mallorca.

The streets of Alcudia have an old-fashioned feel, characterized by cobblestones and a blend of medieval and Roman architecture. Everywhere you look, there are monuments that exude a sense of history, as well as meticulously maintained old mansions.

Alcudia Beach and Port

Continuing with our Mallorca road trip, we arrive at the Port of Alcudia, which happens to be the most popular tourist spot in the area. Along its waterfront, there are many bars and restaurants to choose from.

You can have a great time at Muro Beach, which has received a Blue Flag award for its cleanliness and environmental friendliness.

The beach stretches for 3.5 kilometers and features soft sand and shallow, clear blue waters. It’s an ideal place to visit with your family, especially because children can play and swim safely. Some beaches in Alcudia are among the most beautiful of all Mallorca.

Muro Beach

Muro Beach, also known as Playa de Muro, is close to Alcudia. It boasts a beautiful environment with fine sand and turquoise waters. Surfing, Wing Surfing, Wind Surfing, and other water sports are popular activities at this beach.

From Playa de Muro, you can conclude this Mallorca road trip along the northern route by visiting S’Albufera de Mallorca, the largest wetland park in Mallorca, spanning 2,036 hectares. This park is a great spot for birdwatchers.
